2. What’s the academic support situation? You’re still a student. If your goal is the NBA, you may not be there long. But if it doesn’t work out, you need a degree that opens doors. Some programs have world-class academic support. Others are essentially attendance-optional.
3. What does my NIL situation look like at the new school? Transfer timing affects your NIL position. A move to a larger market, a program with active collectives, or a school with strong local brand relationships can significantly impact your earning ability. This is a financial decision, not just an athletic one.
The Timeline Problem
Transfer windows are short and unforgiving. Miss the window, lose a year. Enter too early without a plan, and you’re scrambling to find a landing spot without leverage. Enter too late, and programs have already filled their rosters.
Good transfer portal strategy starts before you enter — with an honest evaluation of your current situation, a clear sense of what you need, and a plan for how you’ll position yourself once you’re in.
